Date of Birth: April 29, 1981
Oliver Bone was introduced to sailing at the age of 8 during a summer camp in the Montreal area. While he wanted to change sports to join his friends, Oliver's parents decided to keep him in sailing. A few years later he was hooked because of the dynamics between the decision-making process and the physical side of the sport.
In 2000, at age 19, he moved to Nova Scotia to train full time with the National Team. A few years later, he qualified for the 2008 Olympic Games with Stéphane Locas in the 470 class. The Canadian team finished in 29th place. Disappointed, he decided to continue his career toward the Olympic Games in London, but financial and mental health challenges forced him to take a break. In order to get better from his chronic depression, he decided in particular to get back to his passion as he became coach for the brothers Jacob and Graeme Saunders and brought them up to the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio where they finished 22nd.
Following the 2016 Games and the retirement of the Saunders brothers, Oliver approached Jacob to see the possibility to get together and qualify Canada for Tokyo, again in the 470 class. The new teammates hit the water to race at the Miami World Cup. With the help of two competitors and American friends, Stuart McNay and David Hughes, Bone and Saunders qualified Canada in part thanks to the American Team lending them some equipment.
Coached by five-time medalist at the Paralympic Games, Paul Tingley, both athletes took the 17th spot at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, their second Games of their career in the 470 class. Oliver also went to Tokyo along with two other athletes he has coached in the past, Ali ten Hove and Will Jones.
Oliver works as a wine waiter and as a sous-chef in restaurants in Halifax.
