Between June 2nd and June 23rd, The Boulevard Club in Toronto, ON, introduced sixteen youth from the local neighborhood to the sport of sailing. The initiative, which is in its second year, was fully subscribed and waitlisted almost as soon as it was announced. With the help of Kids Up Front, they were able to find an incredible group of 10 to 14-year-olds from Parkdale-High Park that had never been sailing.
Parkdale is one of Canada’s most diverse neighborhoods and has long been a landing spot for newcomers to Canada. The group was introduced to sailing through the iCANSail curriculum while sailing RS Zest’s.
As with many novice sailors who are ready for adventure, capsizing proved to be a major highlight as did the J/24 keelboat session on the final night of the program. A reception was hosted on the viewing area on our Boulevard Club Boathouse roof during all the sessions allowing Families to watch their kids and create Community at the water.
