Description: The 49erFX is a two-handed high-performance sailing dinghy, meaning it is sailed by two people. A dinghy is a small sailing boat that has a centreboard.
Danielle trains and competes full-time with the Canadian 49erFX team and teammate Erin Rafuse.
Danielle was born and raised in Kingston ON, where sailing was a summer ritual. As she began competing her passion for the sport developed. Danielle got into the 29er skiff when she was 16, and raced at the top of the class in Canada and North America. She attended her first world championship in 2009, where she was exposed to the international fleet. The excitement of sailing has always kept her keen and focused on improving. Danielle just finished a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology and English at Dalhousie University. While at Dalhousie, Danielle was actively involved with the Dalhousie Sailing Team, and was a member of the Student Yachting World Cup team that finished 2nd in France this past year. Danielle was selected to represent Canada at the ISAF equipment evaluations and saw the 49erFX as an Olympic potential. Now that the 49erFX has been officially chosen as an Olympic class, Danielle is committed to a full-time campaign with Erin Rafuse.

1. What do you consider to be your greatest accomplishment to date?
Finishing 16th at the ISAF World Cup in Hyeres.
2. If you could have one superpower, what would it be?
I wish I was the Flash, super speed.
3. Do you have any routines and/or superstitions that are considered before you race?
I have some superstitions, but if I talk about them it gives them power. I tend to wear the same hat for an entire event.
4. What is your favourite Pan Am Games memory and/or your favourite sailing memory?
Favourite sailing memory: Our whole family out in my dad’s 505. Me learning how to trapeze by hanging off the shrouds and leaning against my mum, and my sister dragging a line over the side and ‘fishing.’
5. What would be your ultimate achievement in life, and/or in sport?
Win an Olympic medal and publish a novel.
6. What was the best advice you were ever given?
-The person who wins makes the fewest mistakes
-Work hard but enjoy the view
7. What is the strangest thing you have seen happen during a race?
We were sailing down wind before a race and a white object came moving really quickly beneath our boat. We didn’t know what it was a first and started to panic. We identified it as a dolphin, it darted in and out playing in the waves with our boat. It was really cool but also a bit scary as we thought we would hit it every time it swerved in toward our boat.
8. If you could sail with anyone, dead or alive, who would it be?
9. What does the average day in the life of Danielle include?
Most days I wake up around 8am and get dressed for the day. I make breakfast and drink some water or a cup of coffee. Then Erin and I head to the gym/go for a bike ride and get a solid hour to hour and a half of work out in. When at the Canadian Sport Centre Atlantic we usually talk to our team after our work out and before we leave, to socialize with other athletes and our trainers. Then we have some recovery snacks and beverages and head to the boat park eating lunch when we arrive or on the way. Then we start our rigging procedure. Coach Mark usually has a meeting and tells us the days plan and goals and we head out on the water. Our training sessions last anywhere from 2 to 4 hours. Afterwards, we have another meeting to discuss the day and sometimes watch videos. Afterwards, we head home and eat dinner. Then watch some tv, maybe go out for a movie or socializing, and then its to bed. Life in training is pretty full on and kind of boring as we get tired by 7pm and are ready to lie on the couch for the night.
