He first started sailing lessons at OYS when he was 8 years old, sailing in an Optimist boat. His summers were spent progressing through the Canadian Yachting Associations "Learn to Sail" levels. In 2003, at the age of 13, Lee began to sail competitively, racing Laser Radials on the Ontario circuit as a member of the OYS race team. In 2006, Lee joined the Royal Canadian Yacht Club's high performance team in search of better training partners and coaches. By 2007, he started sailing full rig Lasers and has been sailing full rig ever since. With each summer, Lee experienced more success, placing 4th in the Laser North American Championships in June 2007, 2nd at the Laser US Championships in August 2008, and finally winning the annual CORK regatta in August 2008. By 2009 Lee had qualified for the Canadian National Sailing Team at the age of 20. Shortly thereafter, in the spring of 2010, Lee graduated from the University of Guelph with a Bachelor of Commerce Degree. After graduation, Lee decided to pursue an Olympic Sailing Campaign as a full time athlete. He is now considered to be one of the top Olympic hopefuls for Canada in the Laser class.
