William Abbott Senior Trophy - Ashbridges Bay Yacht Club

William Abbott Senior Trophy - Ashbridges Bay Yacht Club

Wednesday February 27th, 2019 - Kingston, ON

It is with great pleasure that Sail Canada presents this year’s William Abbott Senior Trophy to Ashbridges Bay Yacht Club!

Once a primarily recreational program, Ashbridges Bay Yacht Club’s now has one of the best junior racing programs in Ontario. This progress is all due to a tremendous amount of hard work from ABYC’s members. The program began to grow under the direction of Finley and Sophie McEwan, who first started the Opti Racing program a few years ago and has continued to grow with Jeff DeJean and a group of dedicated parents taking the helm.

Many of the program’s graduates have pursued their love of sailing and become coaches themselves or have continued to sail, competing on the Ontario Sailing Team and beyond. ABYC Junior Sailing Program sailors have represented Canada at the Optimist North Americans and other international Optimist Championships as well as Canada Summer Games and the Youth World Championships. The effort and support of the Ashbridges Bay Yacht Club community really shows through with the success of their sailors locally and around the globe.

What does it mean to the sailing school/club to be recognized with William Abbott Senior Trophy; for Sail Training Program of the Year?

We are honored at ABYC to be recognized by Sail Canada, and to be part of the group  of excellent programs that have won this award in past years. We would like to thank Sail Canada, our dedicated and supportive Club membership, as well as all of the  parents, instructors, and volunteers that work hard each year to make our program happen.

Join us in celebrating their award on Friday, March 1st, 2019 at 6.30pm at The Carlu in Toronto, ON. Tickets are available here

In 1991, at the second annual CYA Sail Training Symposium, the Sarnia Yacht Club donated a trophy in honour of William Abbott Senior, who as well as being one of Canada's best known yacht builders, has contributed significantly to sail training at Sarnia Yacht Club.

The purpose of the trophy is to recognize the many fine programs run by dedicated volunteers throughout Canada and to share the information among clubs for the improvement of their sail-training programs. In order to be eligible, the nominated program must:

a) Be run by a club or school member in good standing of Sail Canada.

b) Employ Sail Canada certified instructor(s).

c) Follow the Sail Canada program and use the Sail Canada material.
