Sailor of the Month - Max Gallant

Sailor of the Month - Max Gallant

Friday, September 9th, 2016 – Kingston, ON

The month of August came with no shortage of pinnacle sailing regattas! The 2016 Rio Olympic Games, the Youth and Senior National Championships, and the U21 Laser Worlds were among some of the headliners for the summer. All of our Canadian sailors dug deep as they competed in pursuit of glory, but it was Canadian Sailing Team Laser sailor Max Gallant (Victoria, BC) who shone the brightest.

Max placed 6th in the U21 Laser World Championships in Kiel, Germany. This stand-out performance is a product of Max’s full-time dedication and commitment to sailing. As a developing athlete, Max hopes to build off of the momentum of this victory, and use it as a stepping stone in the remainder of his sailing career. “This year has been an amazing year with selection to The Canadian sailing team to help fuel my efforts towards better and better performances. My progression through the year followed a trend of peaks and valleys as I am still learning to peak at the right times.” Max is praised for his excellent work ethic, and willingness to help others. “This fall my training will have a heavy emphasis on fitness in order to provide me with a platform to work from when I compete in European events this spring.”

The Olympic Games will be the ultimate goal for Gallant along with many sailing hopefuls in the next quadrennial. A diverse roster of nine Olympians were selected to represent Canada at Rio 2016 Olympic Games. The Canadian team of Olympians were relentless in the challenging winds and waters of Marina da Gloria. While no crews made it to the medal races in Rio, many are eager to build off of their experiences as they prepare for their next opportunity to steal the show in Toyko 2020. Canadian Sailing Team veteran Nikola Girke competed at her 5th Olympic Games in Rio and Canadian Radial sailor Brenda Bowskill placed 16th in the competitive fleet, making history as the best Canadian Olympic performance in the single-handed class.

Other notable results in August include Radial sailor Isabella Bertold, placing 6th at the International Women’s Keelboat Championships, Robert Davis, 1st in the Senior Laser National Championships, and Noah Collinson, 1st in the Youth Laser National Championships. Noah also captured a 6th place finish at the Senior Laser National Championships at only 16 years old.

Congratulations to Max Gallant and the other high performance sailors for their accomplishments this month.
