Sail Canada Offshore Personal Survival Training
Sailors around the world take Offshore Personal Survival training (a.k.a. Safety at Sea - Sea Survival) to prepare themselves and their boats for distance and offshore sailing. Offshore Personal Survival training is offered in many countries, including Australia, Canada, France, Italy, New Zealand, Sweden, the United Kingdom and the United States. Many sailing event organizers recommend or require Offshore Personal Survival training for participating crews. World Sailing specifies training requirements in section 6 of the Offshore Special Regulations, and outlines a model course in Appendix G of these regulations.
Offshore Personal Survival training is for experienced sailors who are participating in distance and offshore races and passages. The course includes classroom and practical sessions. Topics covered include safety equipment, storm sails, weather forecasts, heavy weather, man overboard, emergency signals and communications. Practical sessions include inflating and using lifejackets, life rafts and other safety equipment in a pool environment. The course is Sail Canada - World Sailing approved. Participants who successfully complete the course receive an Offshore Personal Survival certificate, valid for five years.
