Sail Canada: Coaching Athletes with a Disability Coach Training Report
May, 28, 2014
Pointe Claire Yacht Club, QC.
This weekend, coaches and program leaders participated in the Sail Canada: Coaching Athletes with Disabilities professional development module. The event was hosted by the Association Québécoise de Voile Adaptée (AQVA), with the participants representing AQVA and the Quinte Sailability program in Trenton, ON. Marc Antoine Brassard of the Quebec Sailing Federation and Véronique Fortier of the AQVA co-facilitated the event as part of their training to become facilitators for the module.
Participants learned about the nature of disabilities and their potential sailing-specific impact, basics of accessibility and inclusion, and ways to adapt equipment and teaching techniques to accommodate a variety of sailor needs.
An important component of the module was to learn directly from sailors with disabilities, which could not have been done without the help of the sailors from AQVA. These sailors braved the high water levels, volunteering their time and expertise to instruct and inspire the participants on the docks.
Thank you to Paula Stone and her team of AQVA volunteers for getting the boats and equipment ready for the workshop!
