RYA collaboration - Skiff Program
Wednesday October 21st, 2015 – Kingston ON
Sail Canada announces collaboration with the Royal Yachting Association. In a transitional role Canadian National Team coach Mark Asquith will work jointly with the top 49erFX teams from Canada and the UK leading up to the 2016 Olympic Games. National Team FX sailors Erin Rafuse and Dannie Boyd will join Asquith in training with the British skiff teams through to the completion of the Olympic Country Qualifying window - which includes the forthcoming 2015 World Championships and the 2016 Sailing World Cup - Miami. Canada is still looking to secure a country berth in the FX class while the British squad have already clinched their spot for 2016. This coaching "partnership" continues through the Olympic Games assuming Canada secures a berth for the Games.
Following the 2016 Olympic Games, Mark will take on a full-time role with the RYA, coaching their skiff program. Head Coach Ken Dool comments, “This is an extremely solid opportunity for Canadian FX sailing. The opportunity to partner with one of the powerhouse nations in sailing provides our athletes world class training and competition opportunities through to Rio. It does ultimately come at a price to Canada as we lose one of the best 49er coaches in the World when Rio concludes. The short-term benefits do have value and Mark has expressed a keen interest in continuing to mentor Canadian coaches and athletes along the Olympic pathway. ”
The 49er World Championships will take place at the Club Nautico San Isidro in Argentina from November 16-21st, 2015 and the 2016 ISAF Sailing World Cup Miami takes place from January 23rd – 30th, 2016.
