Ramsay takes over the lead - Pan Am Games
Thursday, July 16, 2015
Toronto, ON - Toronto delivered an epic easterly breeze ranging from 6-10kts today treating sailors and fans to a full slate of Pan Am races on the fifth day of competition.
Canadian Sunfish sailor Luke Ramsay duplicated his performance from day one of the event posting 3, 1, 1 to relinquish the overall lead ahead of his competitors Martinetti (ECU) and Ducasse (CHI). “Conditions were nice today. Racing was fun and competitive with a little more breeze. My strategy was to stay close to the guys at the top of the leaderboard and not try and outsmart anyone. The races I’m winning are by only one boat length by design.” Ramsay intends to execute the same strategy going into the final day of preliminaries tomorrow.
CAN's Lee Parkhill had a challenging day, rallying to a 2nd place position in the first race of the day only to be yellow flagged by the Jury for kinetics. After executing his 720 turns penalty he gamely fought back within metres of re-claiming 4th yet got caught on the outside of a pinwheel at the bottom mark with a very tight reach to the finish, settling for 8th. Parkhill clawed his way through all 3 races today simply running out of time to pick off his competition. The outcome of today’s onwater battle finds Parkhill sitting just outside podium position for the first time this week. “I sailed well today but just hit a few unlucky breaks that cost me those top 3 finishes.” Lee sits in 4th overall, two points back from American Charlie Buckingham and 5-time Olympic medalist Brazilian legend Robert Scheidt.
Canadian J24 team T McLaughlin/Andrews/Ogden/Jarvis hang onto their second place position with a mixed bag of results today including 2,5,4. "We had a marginal day," explains skipper Terry McLaughlin. "But some of our competitors had a slightly worse day so that always helps." Argentina continues to stretch out their overall lead however the battle is far from over between these top J24 teams.
Tomorrow marks the final day of preliminaries ahead of medal racing on Saturday and Sunday. Medal racing for Olympic classes will be held on Saturday and Pan Am boats on Sunday.
