We were saddened to hear of the sudden and untimely death of Mike McEvoy.
Mike was a passionate dinghy and keelboat sailor.
For over 50 years he was a “Fireball” dinghy racer owning many Fireballs, most recently representing Weathermark Boats in North America. Around 1980. Mike established the Lac Ste. Anne Sailing Association in Alberta and raced Fireballs there. Mike traveled extensively within North America, encouraging the development of the Fireball fleet and coaching many sailors along the way. He almost never missed a mid-winter championship in Florida or a US event in Ohio.
In the course of Mike’s career, he moved a number of times, from Alberta to Ontario, to Saskatchewan, and finally back to Ontario.
Mike started Fireball fleets everywhere he lived. He won the Ontario Provincial Fireball Championship twice and was always a force to be reckoned with on the race course.
Mike competed regularly at the local level, nationally and internationally, in venues as far as Australia, Thailand, and Barbados.
He was a member of Nepean Sailing Club and actively contributed to the club for over 20 years as a owner and skipper of a Catalina 30 “Beau Zephyr”.
Mike was also a Sail Canada cruising instructor from 2011 onwards. He introduced many students to the sailing lifestyle in Ottawa along with teaching many Basic and Intermediate live-aboard courses in the Kingston area as well as in the Caribbean during the winter months. In 2015 he completed an instructor evaluator (IE) clinic and since 2016 has taught several Basic and Intermediate Instructor clinics in the Ottawa-Kingston area. As an instructor and IE, he earned respect from students and colleagues for his knowledge and coaching ability. He will be missed by his fellow Cruising Instructor colleagues and the entire IE group.
In winter while he wasn’t sailing Mike was a keen downhill skier and was Director of the Ski Patrol at Calabogie Peaks.
Our condolences to his wife Margaret Dwulit, and his children and family.
There will be a Celebration of Life for Mike. The event will be held at Nepean Sailing Club Ottawa on November 13 from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
