Meet the recipients of the Gerry Roufs Trophy - The Triple Lindy

February 24th 2018 - Kingston, ON

It is with great pleasure that Sail Canada presents this year’s Gerry Roufs Trophy to the crew of the Triple Lindy!

Owned and campaigned by Joe Mele, the Offshore Race Team comprises a crew of 10 sailors, 6 of which are Canadian; Sean McDermott (RNSYS), Rory Macdonald(RNSYS), Rob Trainor (RNSYS), John Mackay (LYC), Patrick LaRoche (RNSYS), and Kent Paisley (OYS).

The team has had quite a year, competing in 3 of the world’s most iconic offshore races. Between the 2016 Rolex Sydney Hobart, the 2017 Rolex Fastnet Race, and the 2017 Rolex Middle Sea Race (RMSR), the Triple Lindy has the motivation and drive to keep on going.

How does it feel to have been selected as the recipient of the Gerry Roufs Trophy?
Kent - It is a great honour and very nice to be recognized in a sport I love.

When did you start sailing together?
Kent - Triple Lindy group goes back to 2008/2009 (Sean’s answer will probably clarify this better) and I joined in 2012 when I did my first Newport to Bermuda Race with Joe and the Triple Lindy team;

What would you say has been the largest contributing factor to your team’s level of success?
Kent - The commitment that Joe has to the overall success of the boat and the commitment that each of us crew  members have to the program Joe has put together.

What makes up a good team?
Kent - A well organized group, focused on safety, success and a strong commitment to succeed all brought together through sound communication.

What is one piece of advice you could give to sailors towards navigating as a team?
Kent - Ensure that you are aligned in your goals and maintain a strong communication amongst the group on and off the water.

The dedication of these sailors to their team and to the sport is admirable! Join us in celebrating this award on Friday March 2nd, 2018 at 6.30pm at The Carlu in Toronto, ON. Tickets are available here!

This award was established in 1998 by the Canadian Yachting Association to honour the memory of Gerry Roufs, the internationally renowned Canadian sailor and single-handed offshore racer who was lost at sea in 1997.

The award is presented to the person whose achievement in international offshore racing has had significant impact on the recognition of sailing in Canada.
