Governance Update

Governance Update

Monday April 25, 2016 – Kingston ON
Immediate Release

Sail Canada concluded its semi-annual directors meeting in Toronto last week. Sail Canada Directors, Sail Canada Committee Chairs, Presidents and Executive Directors from a number of Provincial Sailing Associations joined in the conversation. The recently constituted High Performance Committee held their first face-to-face meeting to coincide with the Board meeting.

The Board Reviewed progress against the Strategic Plan and began work on confirming measures and goals as part of the implementation of the plan. The Board focused in particular on the following three key pillars, identified in the plan:
o Development
o Participation
o Performance

The Board agreed specific measures with the HP Committee Performance to improve Canadian performances on the world stage. There will be an increased focus on developing young athletes in association with the provincial partners, while systematically tracking their progress.

Several key volunteer leaders, with significant track records in HP, have committed their time and attention to this area and are also committed to increasing revenue to support Canada’s sailing athletes. Sail Canada has committed to backing up this area from its own resources to ensure continuity while funding is being sourced. Considerable progress has also been made in recruiting a dedicated High Performance Director.
The Board will continue to offer updates to the sailing community over the course of this year.
