As sailors, we rely on the water on which we sail; however, it is sometimes easy to forget about the importance of keeping these watery spaces, clean, safe and healthy for your club, members, youth sailors and even the wild creatures and plants that share our space. Thanks to a partnership with the Canadian Wildlife Federation Sail Canada is pleased to be able to share resources and programs that can be used at clubs and schools across Canada.
Best practices on the Water
The Canadian Wildlife Federation’s Best Practices resource helps Canadians take action on and around the water, helping to create awareness and understanding of the environment. Some of the best practices for keeping the environment in mind during your sailing activities are focused on:
• Best Practices for you Club
• Best Practices for Regattas/ Club Events
• Best Practices for Youth Sailors & Youth Sailing Programs
• Best Practices for Cruising
Check out the complete Best Practices - On the Water resource to see what steps you and your sailing community can take help your environment!
CFW Wild About Sports
The Wild About Sports program was created by the Canadian Wildlife Federation as a way to connect young active Canadians with environmental awareness and wildlife habitat. The goal is to use sports such as sailing and soccer to increase an appreciation for the fields, lakes and trails where young people play. The Canadian Wildlife Federation has created a Wild About Sports manual that provides information and resources for coaches and instructors to use in teaching their athletes about environmental best practices. All registered Sail Canada Instructors have access to the Wild About Sports manual through their Sail Canada profile.
The Canadian Wildlife Federation offers a number of educational workshops and webinars that provide tips and resource on how to integrate environmental education into your coaching and teaching on and around the water. Check it out here!
