Day 6: Canadian Laser and Radial Olympic wrap up

Day 6: Canadian Laser and Radial Olympic wrap up

Saturday, August 13, 2016 – Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Qualifying rounds ended today for Laser and Radial fleets which marked the end of the Olympic journey for Canadians Brenda Bowskill and Lee Parkhill. While the singlehanded sailors didn’t make the top 10 cut, they consistently made gains on the water and scoreboard.

Radial sailor Brenda Bowskill (Whitby, ON) wrapped up her Olympic regatta in 16th overall, a top Olympic finish for a Canadian Radial sailor. Her coach, Lisa Ross, finished 17th at the Beijing Olympic Games. “I am happy with certain aspects of my sailing this week. My speed was really good and I’m happy that’s coming together. I know I’m headed in the right direction and I plan to sail to 2020.”
Bowskill finished 16th overall out of 37 boats.

Lee Parkhill (Oakville, ON) had a tough start to his event, posting high scores that left him clawing his way back through the fleet. “I am happy that I improved every day from a bad start. There are 45 other guys out there that also trained for 4 years. They aren’t going to wait for you if you have a bad day.” Parkhill placed 5th overall at the 2015 Olympic Test Event. “It’s bittersweet but I promised myself that as long as I fought until that last moment and moved up as much as possible, I would be able to sleep at night. I fought to the bitter end of that last race, passing a boat in my last race with only 30 seconds to the finish line”.
Parkhill finished 23rd overall of 46 boats.

Team Canada results after Day 6:

Racing is scheduled for the Finn, 470 Men, and Nacra 17. Medal racing is taking place for the RSX fleets.
