Day 5: CAN 49erFX takes an early lead - Rio Olympic Sailing

Friday, August 12th – Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

It was a slow start to Day 5 with postponements for all classes at Marina da Gloria. Lasers and Radials were sent out on time with an on-water delay of 90 minutes. 49er FX fleet had a frustrating start to their event with postponements on and off-water until 16:30. Fortunately, Olympic race committees managed to squeeze in a shortened schedule for all fleets.

49erFX
The 49erFX fleet was the last to launch this week but it was clearly worth the wait for Canadian 49erFX team Erin Rafuse and Danielle Boyd who stormed out of the gates with a 4, 5 on the day – securing an early lead in the FX fleet.  “These conditions are right in our wheelhouse. Good starts also help. We don’t like to focus on the numbers but this is definitely our best start to a regatta.”

The FX duo will look to build on their scorecard with 4 races scheduled today.

Erin Rafuse and Danielle Boyd – 5, 4 – 1st overall
