Summary
The CST Open Training — Weekend 2 brought together a diverse group of aspiring sailors at RVanYC for three days of on water training and learning. With over 15 ILCA sailors and three 29er teams engaged across the weekend, the camp emphasized fundamentals, decision making in light and shifty conditions, and race skills execution. We extend a sincere thank you to RVYC for hosting, and to CST athlete Victoria Coady for on water support and sharing first hand insights about competing internationally and pursuing an Olympic campaign as a Canadian sailor.

Highlights

  • Athlete Mentorship: Victoria Coady led peer to peer mentoring, Q&A, and on water support.
  • Guest leader: Andrew Wood contributed to advanced debriefs (29er and ILCA groups).
  • Technical Focus: Mark rounding execution, gybe-to-accelerate patterns, and starting line awareness.
  • Conditions Based Learning: Light/variable breeze early; shifty, puffy easterly phases delivering real time tactical lessons.
  • Community & Collaboration: Strong support from BC Sailing and club coaches to tailor learning to a wide range of experience levels supporting the pathway.

This training weekend underscores our commitment to accessible, high value pathway opportunities while building alignment across clubs and provincial partners.

Participation & Fleet Mix

  • Classes: ILCA (mix of ILCA 4/6 rigs) and 29er.
  • Attendance: 15+ ILCA sailors and 3 x 29er teams across the weekend.
  • Experience Range: From entry level ILCA sailors (including athletes transitioning from Optimist) to athletes preparing for provincial/national pathway objectives.

Coaching ratios improved through the weekend as additional club and provincial coaches joined sessions, allowing for breakout groups by skill and class.

Conditions Overview

  • Day 1 (Friday): Light air; brief evening pressure offering a productive final session.
  • Day 2 (Saturday): Shifty, puffy easterly; ideal for tactical reads, lane management, and boat handling under pressure.
  • Day 3 (Sunday): Continued variable conditions with targeted class specific progressions. Guest coach Andrew Wood contributed to advanced debriefs (29er and ILCA groups).

Training Content & Methodology

Boat Handling & Maneuvers

  • Convergent zone bottom mark rounding sequences (gybing figure 8 patterns; down to the mark on whistle cues).
  • Upwind accelerations off an imaginary line formed by the coach boat(s), emphasizing time and distance and sheeting/trim timing.

Race Skills & Decision Making

  • Lane holding in light/shifty air; risk management near boundaries.
  • Exit angles and VMG protection through mark zones.
  • Communication standards and debrief structure (self assessment → peer feedback → coach prescription).

Mentorship & Culture
• Athlete talk with Victoria Coady on the realities of international competition and Olympic campaigning: training blocks, school sport balance, travel demands, and teamwork with support staff.

Athlete Development Outcomes

  • Fundamentals: Noticeable gains in boat control through gybes and post maneuver acceleration.
  • Tactics: Improved spatial awareness in the mark zone and decision making under variable breeze.
  • Preparation Habits: Stronger pre launch routines and on water communication; athletes practiced goal setting before each block and checked progress in debrief.

With a wide range of experience present, coaches ran parallel progressions so each sailor worked at an appropriate challenge level.

Community & Thanks

  • Royal Vancouver Yacht Club (RVYC): Thank you for hosting and supporting dock/launch logistics.
  • BC Sailing & Kevin Black: Appreciated the on water alignment and coach coverage.

CST Athlete Mentor – Victoria Coady: Thank you for your leadership and generous sharing of high performance insights.
