Canada leads 3 classes after Day 2 - 2015 Pan Am Games
Monday, July 13, 2015
Toronto, ON - A full schedule of racing was completed on Day 2 at the 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto, ON. Sailors launched on schedule from the Royal Canadian Yacht Club and racing was underway for almost all classes at 1130am.
Sunfish frontrunner Luke Ramsay carried over his bullet from yesterday and followed it up today with another race win and third place finish in Race 3. Ramsay has a 5 point lead over Chile and USA. "I'm just keeping my head down and trying to put some good scores on the board." - Luke Ramsay.
Canadian J24 team, led by Terry McLaughlin, managed to take over the lead today with two bullets and a six point lead over Argentina. Terry's son, Evert, slipped slightly back in the Snipe standings to 3rd overall with teammate Alexandra Damley-Strnad.
Rio hopeful, Lee Parkhill stepped up to the Pan Am plate today posting three very solid scores - 1, 2, taking over the lead after the drop was applied, with an 11 point advantage over American Charlie Buckingham. "One good day is great to have but there are still five more to go. So just keep plugging away trying to get some consistent scores and if the opportunity comes to win a couple more then take it." Parkhill is motivated by the hometown support saying, "It's awesome to be out there and be the Canadian against the other countries and at home. I had two boats of people out there today - friends and family coming to watch so it's really fun."
On the RSX course, Vancouver native Zac Plavsic continues to battle near the front of the fleet in 3rd despite a frustrating day. "There were a lot of OCS's (an over course side, false start) on the race course today. It was a bit frustrating. Of my 15 years of sailing, today was my second OCS ever. It's not a normal thing." Canadian Teammate Nikola Girke is struggling to find her footing in the womens fleet saying, "These conditions are not my strength. I am battling hard and am still in the fight".
Two more races are scheduled for 1130am tomorrow.
