Day 4

What started out as a light and foggy day at Lunenburg Yacht Club, turned into a beautiful day of racing on the ocean just outside of Mahone Bay. The race committee managed to get in 3 races completing the final round robin of the event. The regatta wraps up with 15 races in 5 round robin series completed.

After 4 days of highly competitive racing between some of Canada’s best female sailing teams, the final results were tight! The 2017 Sail Canada Women’s Champions, from Kingston Yacht Club are Melodie Gummer, Janice Wilby, Carol Luttmer, Susan Fraser. This is the team’s second consecutive year winning this event!

LYC ran a great event for the sailors from across the country! A big thank you to the volunteers and officials who made the event possible and to the Lunenburg Yacht Club members for lending out their Sonars to the competitors for this event!

Day 3

Day 3 of racing started off with lots of fog, but it soon cleared giving way to sunny skies and a building breeze of 9- 12 knots! Sailors raced off of Loyd and Couvey Island at the mouth of Mahone Bay which provided challenging sailing conditions and tactical racing.

Race committee got off four races completing the fourth round robin off the event.

Day 2

Day 2 of racing at the Women’s Keelboat Championships was a long one, after some time waiting for wind, the race committee got 4 races off in 6-9 knots of wind, completing the 2nd round robin and getting ahead start on to the third round robin.

Day 1

Day 1 of racing at the Women’s Keelboat Championships were off to a good start with warm winds and clear skies. With a southerly breeze blowing 6-7 knots throughout the day, race committee was able to get 4 races in, moving into the second round robin round.

The event is being held in a round robin style with 3 races in each round robin series and with teams alternating boats throughout the event.

The 2017 Women’s National Keelboat Championship is the final regatta in this year’s Sail Canada Championships series. The event starts Wednesday at Lunenburg Yacht Club in Lunenburg, NS with on-water training and practice races in the afternoon. Four days of racing will follow, where 15 boats from 4 different provinces will square-off in pursuit of a gold medal. Sailors will be racing the 4-crew boat, the Sonar, supplied by the Lunenburg Yacht Club in a round robin style series coming to an end on Sunday. The award ceremony will take place on Sunday afternoon, with the top three boats receiving Helly Hansen prizes.

The Women’s Keelboat Championship is a national event that is open to competitors across the country. It is hosted annually, rotating through the western, central, and eastern regions of Canada. This year Lunenburg Yacht Club in Lunenburg, NS located in the eastern Canada was selected to host the regatta. The LYC has achieved a strong reputation in the sailing community and has a long history of hosting successful regattas. Its portfolio includes the 2017 Sonar World Championships, the 2014 Sonar North Americans, the 2002 Volvo World Youth Sailing Championships, as well as the 2008, 2011, and 2014 Canadian National Optimist Sailing Championships.
