Sail Canada Championships bring training & racing opportunities for sailors, coaches & officials to your club. Sail Canada & local host organizing committees collaborate to deliver the annual championships that award regional and national titles.

Sail Canada YOUTH CHAMPIONSHIPS

Youth Championships Hosting Requirements & Proposal Process

Sail Canada’s Youth Championship is an annual event bringing together the countries top competitive youth sailors. The purpose of the championship is to:

  • Provide opportunities for development of competitive youth sailors, through valuable training & racing experiences
  • Award Youth National Champions in the Laser, Laser Radial, Laser 4.7, 420, 29er and RS:X classes
  • Provide development and mentoring opportunities to coaches
  • Deliver training and development opportunities for officials and volunteers
  • Build legacy in the host region for future event hosting through development of officials, volunteers, venues & local resources
  • Serve as a talent identification opportunity for national and provincial sailing teams

Regional Rotation
The Sail Canada Youth Championships will rotate through major sailing venues in the East, Central and West regions of Canada on an annual basis. The rotation schedule will follow an East – Central – West – Central schedule. The regions are set as:

  • East: Newfoundland, Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick
  • Central: Quebec, Ontario
  • West: Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, British Columbia

Sail Canada Youth Championships Event Delivery Requirements

Sail Canada Youth Championships are to be delivered according to the Sail Canada Youth Championships Hosting Requirements & hosting agreement.
 
Proposals to Host:
Proposals are to be received by Sail Canada no later than May 31st of the year prior to the Championship and must include the following detail.

A written proposal including:

  • Host venue location & facilities
  • Sailing area & expected conditions (wind & weather for time of year)
  • Proposed dates & schedule
  • A detailed outline of the Host Organization’s ability to meet the requirements listed in the Venue Requirements & Championship Organization sections of this document
  • Endorsement from the Provincial Sailing Association
  • Endorsement from Host Organization’s Commodore &/or Board of Directors

Sail Canada REGIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

Regional Championship Hosting Requirements & Proposal Process

Sail Canada Regional championships take place annually in the Western, Atlantic and Central Regions of Canada. Sail Canada Regional events hold the mandate to:

  • Provide training and competitive experiences to any sailor over the age of 7 in the Optimist Dinghy, Laser 4.7, Laser Radial, 420, 29er, Laser and 2.4m classes;
  • Award U17 and open age Regional National Champions in these classes;
  • Provide professional development and mentoring to Instructors and Coaches and other qualified individuals toward Sail Canada Instructor or Coach certification;
  • Build a legacy in the host region to deliver race programming and events by developing persons in Race Management, Judging, and Sport Event Organization; 
Sail Canada Regional Sailing Championships are intended to be held in the last two weeks of July or first week of August each year and run over 4 days – 2 days training, 2 days of championship racing.
 
Regional ROTATION
Proposals to host Sail West, Sail East & Sail Central are provided to Sail Canada by member organizations in good standing from the province of the region of Canada that the rotation tables below suggest.
 
There are 3 regions, set as follows:
· Western Canada – BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba
· Central Canada – Ontario, Quebec
· Eastern Canada – New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, PEI, Newfoundland and Labrador  
 
The following is agreed to by respective Provincial Sailing Associations as ideal rotation for the location of the Sail Canada Regional events:

NB: In the event that a PSA deems not to be bidding to host in a year they are entitled to, the opportunity to consider bidding will go to the other provinces of the region. Allocation to a province other than the one in rotation table does not result in revision to the set rotation.

 WOMEN'S KEELBOAT CHAMPIONSHIPS

Women's Championship Hosting Requirements & Proposal Process

The Women’s Keelboat Championship is hosted annually, rotating through the western, central and eastern regions of Canada. The event is open to competitors across the country, a number of whom are able to take part thanks to the provision of charter boats from the local area.

The organization awarded the event will execute a Memorandum of Understanding with Sail Canada outlining the responsibilities of each party.

Proposals are to be received by Sail Canada no later than May 31st of the year prior to the Championship and must include the following:
• Executive Summary of the Organization’s plan to host
• Endorsement from their Provincial Sailing Association
• Name Chairperson(s) to be appointed
• Indication of the fleet that would be used
