About the Job:

The Pan American Games will be held in Toronto from July 10 to July 26, 2015 with the overall management performed by TO2015. The Royal Canadian Yacht Club is the venue for the Sailing Event. The RCYC will be hosting 140 athletes in 10 classes of boats and the racing will take place on three race courses – two in Lake Ontario and one in Toronto Harbour. In addition to the athletes, there will be coaches, national and international sailing federation officials, staff and volunteers. In total there will be up to 300 people involved in putting on the event.

Event Director Job Description:
The Event Director is a senior volunteer position and has overall responsibility for all aspects of the on-shore management of the Event subject to certain functions that are fulfilled either by T02015 staff or Games security officials in which case you will be required to liaise and coordinate with the Event volunteers. Reporting to the Chairman of the RCYC Organizing Committee, you will be responsible to ensure that the event meets all the requirements of the International and Pan American Sailing Federations and the smooth functioning of the volunteer organization in support of the Event.


  • In conjunction with the RCYC Organizing Committee, plan the requirements for the management and direction of the volunteers;
  • Recruit volunteer managers in each of the identified functional areas;
  • Support the recruitment, training and management of volunteers for each functional area by the functional area manager;
  • Liaise with TO2015 and security officials to ensure that all aspects of the venue meet International and PanAm Games requirements;
  • Liaise with TO2015 and PASAF Technical Delegate to ensure that all aspects of the competition are organized and executed in accordance with International and PanAm Games rules;
  • Liaise with Event staff and volunteers as required;
  • Lead and support the coordination of suppliers to the Event;
  • Participate in the Venue planning and layout;

Knowledge, Skills and Experience:

  • An outstanding knowledge of the sport of Sailing including a strong understanding of the ISAF requirements for the organization and management of Regional Games; experience as a racing sailor is a definite asset;
  • Proven management experience and ability to lead and motivate a team in a pressured team environment;
  • Experience in event management, preferably in the management of elite athletic competitions;
  • Excellent communication, negotiation and interpersonal skills;
  • Ability to coach, guide and develop team members;
  • Resourceful, highly organized and detail oriented;
  • A sense of humour, energetic and a positive attitude;
  • Able to anticipate issues and react quickly to correct or control them;
  • An ability to work under pressure, working to timetables and budget;
  • Excellent administrative skills and an ability to use a range of generally recognized office and event management software;
  • An ability to speak and read Spanish is an asset.
