50th Anniversary of Shediac to Charlottetown Night NSTYA Race
The Northumberland Strait Yachting Association (NSTYA) is pleased to highlight the 50th Anniversary of one it's signature races this upcoming weekend. The Annual Shediac, NB to Charlottetown, PEI Race is celebrating a milestone Anniversary on July 12, 2013. The yacht race covers a distance of over 70 nautical miles with competitors racing under the Confederation Bridge to finish at the Charlottetown Yacht Club both Friday night and Saturday morning.
Normally run as a night time race beginning on Friday evening, this year will accommodate a large line up of entries and offers two race starts - a day time race begins with a Bermuda start on July 12 at 8am, and a sanctioned NSTYA night race is slotted for early Friday evening.
The Annual race beginning in 1964 has hosted over 40 boats in the seventies with entries from United States, Halifax, NB, and PEI. This year organizers are preparing for over 50 sailboats to be on starting line for 2013. The daytime race will see boats leave Shediac, NB starting at 8am with close to 15 boats, while the night race starting at 7pm will see close to 40 boats vying for top honors in various race classes.
Entries from both races will be over the finish line starting early afternoon on Friday while the sanctioned race entries will be racing overnight with expected arrivals starting from 6am onwards until noon on July 13. Regular race participant, Event Chair and President of NSTYA, Mickey Cormier, of Ponte De Chene Yacht Club is excited at the shore events for all entries in both NB and PEI to celebrate this event and states "This year will be monumental with over fifty boats on the start line, and we look forward to the Award Ceremony in Charlottetown with visiting and local dignitaries."
Terry Scott, Commodore of the Charlottetown Yacht Club, is pleased for this year's turn out. "The committee from both NSTYA, Pointe De Chene Yacht Club and the Charlottetown Yacht Club has been planning this event for over a year, and CYC is excited to host the Awards ceremony portion of this prestigious event with its estimated 250 sailors participating in this celebratory race". Scott notes "This annual event kicks off the Vogue Optical Charlottetown Race Week and hopes members of the public will catch a glimpse and cheer on finishing boats over the 16 hour finish time in the Charlottetown Harbour".
The Northumberland Strait Yachting Association originated to provide an avenue of camaraderie amongst fellow yachters who sailed the waters of Northumberland Strait. The over half century old organization encourages and promotes yachting in Northumberland Strait and it's adjacent waters through promoting both cruising and racing. NSTYA is best known for its jurisdiction over all offshore yachting activities through sanctioned races in a series of yearly races between Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island with close to ten participating yacht clubs. Participating boats range from 22 feet to over 40 feet in length. For further information on entries, race or NSTYA information, view online at http://www.nsyta.com
