The U17 Sailing Championships at the CYA Youth Nationals kicked off Thursday and ended Saturday August 7th! 4 Provinces sent sailors in the Laser Radial and the Club 420.

The results show close scores in a few cases, ensuring that the young competitors from neighbouring provinces really pushed each other! Ontario's Kingston Yacht Club produced double gold winners in the Single Handed Female and Open Double handed fleets. Berg Ellemers and Ali tenHove performed to take the win in the Club 420, while Violet Stafford did the same with the female Laser Radial fleet. Quebec's Victor Sullivan from Pointe Claire Yacht Club showed strength as top Laser Radial Male sailor. Mark McGugan of Nepean Sailing Club - who sailed the U19 championships and tirelessly volunteered in both the U17 and U19 championships, was awarded the Fogh Marine Sportmanship Trophy.

Day 1 of racing (Thursday, Aug 5th):
Light winds from the North West and shifting directions of 90 degrees and velocity changes from 3-12 knots proved very challenging for the race committee to set a proper course, as well as difficult racing conditions for sailors.

Day 2 of racing
The temperature had dropped significantly taking the humidity out of the air, with winds in excess of 30 knots and arge steep waves coming from the West. Not knowing truly how windy it was the race committee set out of the harbour, only to return 10 minutes later notifying competitors to stay on shore with the postponement flag. They checked back in with the sailors throughout the day informing everyone they would send the fleets out later in the day with the weather forecasting lighter winds after 2pm. Finally, at 3pm, the sailors left the harbour and first race of the day began at 4pm in a steady 13 knots (gusts up to 20knots) from the North West.

Day 3 (final Day):
After consulting with the Race Committee, it was decided to start races earlier than the previous days to make up for lost time on the water from the postponement the day before. Also, races would be shortened to finish downwind, allowing for more races to get sailed. Everyone was aiming to get a total of 10 races (giving sailors 2 drop races). In the end this was achieved with RC getting 5 races in during the day.

The winds were stronger than Day 1, but less than Day 2. Shifty and big velocity changes from the North West again.
