Vancouver 2010 had some unexpected side effects for BC sailors. One supporter, Wendy Benyk, the CEO of Lakes District Maintenance Ltd., was so inspired by the Canadian Olympic spirit she decided to help out the athletes. On a chance meeting with one of our Olympic sailors she began asking about issues the sailors faced.
She was very moved by the stories of single minded determination but replied back, “Well nobody ever asks us for support. My business community would be really interested in helping out the athletes!”
About a month later Wendy sent a $6000 check to be split between the returning BC Olympic sailors, Zac Plavsic, Nikola Girke, and Mike Leigh. “I really hope this is the start of something that keeps these inspiring athletes in the game through their peak years.”
