Powerboat Instructor Evaluator Standard
PREREQUISITES
The candidate must:
1. Be 2l years old or over;
2. Be a current registered Intermediate PowerBoat instructor for one year and have conducted at least two intermediate programs;
3. Have current Standard First Aid, CPR level B or higher, and VHF operator’s certificates;
4. Achieve a minimum of 90% on written exams;
5. Demonstrate ability to boat and teach at an advanced or Offshore level;
6. Demonstrate characteristics worthy of being an IE;
7. Be able to evaluate and critique in a positive manner;
8. Demonstrate a willingness and commitment to promote and uphold the goals of the CYA LTC Standards and policies including those of the candidate’s respective provincial sailing association;
9. Be recommended by a PowerBoat instructorEvaluator (registered for the current year) and the respective provincial sailing association;
10. Be accepted by the CYA LTC Committee.
Notes:
1. The number of IE’s in each region are based on demand. Becoming an IE is a privilege, not a right.
2. Programming of lE Clinics is under the auspices of the CYA LTC Committee.
3. Upon successful completion of an initial CYA Learn to Cruise / PowerBoat Clinic, the IE Candidate must demonstrate the ability to organize, teach and conduct a Basic PowerBoat Instructor Clinic under the auspices of two current IE’s. These IE’s will be required to evaluate the lE Candidate’s performance and submit a recommendation to the CYA LTC Committee immediately following the clinic. This process must be completed within twelve months.
CERTIFICATION POWER
Basic Outboard, Basic PowerBoat, Intermediate PowerBoat, Basic PowerBoat Instructor, Intermediate PowerBoat Instructor, provided the instructor is registered with CYA for the current year. Recertification is required for all instructor levels within 36 months of the first calendar yearend following the last day of an initial certification, recertification or instructor development clinic as authorized by the CYA Learn to Cruise Committee.
Recertification is by application to the CYA LTC Committee. During a three year period prior to recertification, the IE must have taught a combination of student and instructor standards or have done significant committee work recognized by the CYA LTC Committee. The IE must be in attendance during all evaluation components of an Instructor Clinic. IE’s who have not personally observed a candidate cannot recommend the candidate for certification.
