Intermediate Powerboat Instructor Standard

It is envisioned that this Standard be implemented in one 8 hour ashore session and a minimum of one continuous 48 hour period afloat.

Prerequisites
The candidate must:

Be age 19 or older;

Be currently registered as a CYA Basic Powerboat Instructor;

Have at least one season and a minimum of 150 hours logged as a CYA Basic Powerboat Instructor;

Have the CYA Intermediate Powerboat Student Standard;

Have logged cruising time of 17 days as a skipper, minimum 3 days at a time;

Demonstrate characteristics and motivations worthy of being at CYA LT/CP Instructor;

Demonstrate a willingness to support the goals of the CYA LTC/P program.

Ashore Knowledge
The candidate must:

  1. Achieve a mark of 90% on the CYA Intermediate Powerboat examination;
  2. Achieve a mark of 90% on the CYA Coastal Navigation examination;
  3. Achieve a mark of 90% on the CYA Colregs and Buoyage Exam based on Rules 1 through 37, 40 and 45 of the Collision Regulations (Colregs), and the Canadian Buoyage System;
  4. Achieve a mark of 90% on all CYA Intermediate Powerboat Working Papers as supplied in the Intermediate Cruising Instructor Candidate Workbook.  These are open-book and completed at home before the clinic.

Ashore Skills
The candidate will be evaluated on ability to plan, teach, coach and evaluate a selection of performance objectives from the Ashore Knowledge section of the CYA Intermediate Powerboat Standard.

Afloat Skills

The candidate:

  1. Will be evaluated on ability to plan, teach, coach and evaluate a selection of performance objectives from the Afloat Skills in the CYA Intermediate Powerboat Standard;
  2. Will be evaluated on ability to handle simulated emergency situations, specifically: steering failure, engine failure in crowed harbor, taking another vessel in tow, fire fighting, galley emergencies;
  3. Will be evaluated on ability to assume total command of the vessel and its crew;
  4. Will provide a course curriculum for a program leading to the CYA Intermediate Powerboat Standard;
  5. Must demonstrate personal traits so as to be worthy of respect as a CYA Instructor specifically while living aboard a vessel.

Certification Power

Intermediate Powerboat Standard.

Instructors/IEs must register annually prior to teaching or awarding CYA certifications.

An Instructor/IE Candidate should possess all prerequisites prior to enrolling in a clinic, and must complete all the requirements for certification within four months of the last day of the IDP in which the Instructor Candidate participated.

Recertification is required for all instructor/IE levels within 36 months of the first calendar yearend following the last day of an initial certification, recertification or IDP as authorized by the CYA LTC/P Committee. 

Recertification is by application to the CYA as per Training Division Policy Manual or by attending an IDP to renew or upgrade Instructor/IE qualifications.
