New Coaching Development Programs
New Learn to Sail Coach Program
We have created a number of simple diagrams to help explain the structure of the new system, how we anticipate existing coaches will fit in the new system, and how current instructor evaluators can transition into the new system:

IEs vs. Learning Facilitators & Evaluators
Note: While the Coaching Association of Canada is currently developing a policy regarding the conversion of coaches certified under the old NCCP to the new programs, all coaches as a minimum will be required to successfully complete the CAC online Ethics evaluation. In order to ensure successful completion of this evaluation, it is also recommended that all coaches attend the Make Ethical Decisions module of either the CYA Fundamental Course or the NCCP multi-sport Introduction to Competition - Part A. Please contact your Provincial Sailing Association for course schedules.

As new programs are developed, you will be able to find information such as the training & certification requirements, evaluation standards and evaluation tools here.
Transition to the “new” National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP)
As most of you in the sailing community probably already know, the NCCP is currently in the midst of a transition to a competency-based approach to coach education and training, where a coach is trained and may achieve certification to coach a specific type of participant in a particular coaching environment. As is the case whenever changes are introduced, there is some confusion within the sporting community as to what these changes mean and how coaches will fit into the new system. The most current versions of the CYA Coach Development Model that outlines the different proposed sailing coaching “streams” and specific “contexts” can be found below. A similar model for participants can also be found below.
Coach Development Model Participant Development Model
You will notice that there are two main streams in this model: an instruction or recreational stream and a competitive stream. Within each of these streams are a number of “contexts” or environments, within which individuals may coach. The base course in this system is the Fundamental Course, which encompasses the old Level 1 Theory, and much of the old Level 2 Theory, but within a sailing-specific context. Completion of this course is required prior to continuing on into either coaching stream.
For sailing, one of the main differences between this new approach and the old NCCP is that there is no longer the same linear progression that coaches are familiar with (green then blue then...). For example, once a coach has become certified as a Learn to Race coach they can be employed in this context. There is no requirement for them to “move on” to another level if they want to remain as a Learn to Race coach. There is also no requirement for coaches to be certified in the instruction stream prior to entering the competitive stream. For example, an experienced racer could enter directly into the coaching system as a “Competitive Race Coach” without first becoming certified in the instruction stream or as a Learn to Race coach. Individuals are also not restricted to one stream. Under the new system, someone could become certified and employed for example, as both a LTS Coach and a LTR Coach.
You will also notice that there are Professional Development modules listed. Once a coach has become certified in a specific coaching context, they may decide to complete one or more of these modules either because of personal interest or to increase their employability.
What progress have we made so far?
Learn to Race Coach - CYA's Learn to Race Coach program received “final approval” from the Coaching Association of Canada (CAC) in 2006. This program is now being offered across Canada.
Learn to Sail Coach - CYA's new LTS Coach program, which includes the White Sail Coach & Bronze Sail Coach, recently received "conditional approval" from CAC. This program is being implemented in most provinces in 2008.
Competitive Race Coach - development of this program, which will replace the current Orange, is set to begin in 2008. It is anticipated that this program will be ready for implementation in 2010.
High Performance Race Coach - this program, which replaces the Level 4/5 program, will be the last program to be implemented. Development will begin once the Competitive Race Coach program is implemented.
Professional Development Modules - a number of professional development modules for coaches have already been developed, and more are planned. The Program Manager Module, which is designed to assist individuals to become competent administrators of a sailing school program, is now being offered across Canada. The Wet Feet & Opti modules, which were developed by BC Sailing, are being implemented across Canada in 2008.
